There is still lots of money to be made in domain name market. Several people hit the gold when they sold long held domains for unthinkable prices.
The people who bought and held on to good domains had some great foresight, which paid off in domain-gold.
Can a new domain investor make their gold in the current domain marketplace?
Lets find out what you need to look in domains to find the gems which will sell at good prices.
1. Brandable, Generic or Regular words.
Brandable names are made up names, that usually are not in the dictionary. One way to come up with these kind of names is look at the names which are already there, like google and eBay.
Now as for generic words, most of the good single word domains are already taken, two word domains that have real life meaning and rhyme together are a good choice.
Here are some ways to look for domain names which might be good candidates for purchase. You don’t need to spend any money but you need to spend some time thinking through it.
Take a piece of paper and pen, check today’s newspaper or article of interest online and start writing words which appeal to you.
This works very well also when you are watching a movie or a television show, the trick is to write down the potential domain names and not get engrossed in the TV show or the movie.
Once you have found the potential domain words of interest, go to any registrar and run them through to see if they are available or not.
2. What extensions to look for, .com, .net or new gTLD.
If your domain is not available in your choice of extension, the registrar will usually show you other extensions which are available for that domain.
If you think that other domain extension will work for you hit the buy button otherwise move on to the next domain.
If you are new to the domain game it is better to stick with .com extension, as price wise and time to hold is greater in .net and .org than .com.
3. Characters in the domain. (Say 4 or 5 at most)
3 letter names are hard to find and are priced very high if available. You really want to buy a 3 letter domain when you have some experience in this field.
Good 4 character names are most of the time available on domain auction sites like Godaddy, Namejet and Sedo.
Pronounceable 5 character names are mostly available on auction sites. Many are also available to hand register.
4. Is the domain pronounceable.
The key to selecting a good domain names is to ensure that they are pronounceable. While not complete, English dictionary is a good place to start.
5. The radio test. (does the domain pass radio test)
Radio test is a way of checking domains for their easiness to remember. In this test a person should be able to spell your domain when they hear it. Start with yourself, if you hear the domain name, will you be able to spell it?
6. Keyboard test. (is it easy to type)
The last test on the list is the keyboard test. How easily can you type the domain name. When somebody is ready to spend large amount of money on a domain name, this can be a criteria they might want the domain to pass.
Once you have found the desired domain names, you still have to go through the process of the tests mentioned above, and if the domain passes the test then you will have a winner.
