Who Registers Domain Names?

Domain name registrar is an entity that registers domain names. To become a domain name registrar the company has to be accredited by ICANN or by a national ccTLD authority or both in order to register domain names.

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit institution that is responsible for IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management and root server system management functions.

Jon Postel was the founder of ICANN which was created in 1998 in California in response to a policy statement issued by the US Department of Commerce.

ICANN has authority over gTLDs (Generic Top Level Domains) that include .com, .net, .org and many new ones.

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers does not have jurisdiction over Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs), which include .ca (Canada), .uk (United Kingdom), .us (United States), .in (India), .de (Germany), .fr (France) etc.

There are nineteen directors in ICANN board, and nine At-Large Directors. Directors have one year term only. At-large membership organization elects the At-Large Directors.

There were many measures taken by ICANN at the time when domain-name registration system’s transition was taking place from government to private hands.

To become a domain registrar a company has to be Accredited by ICANN to register and manage domain names on its behalf.

Domain name registration service is provided by many ICANN accredited registrars in the US and worldwide.

These are some of the large registrars including eNom, Go Daddy, Moniker Online Services, Namecheap, Network Solutions, Register.com, and Tucows.
