If you are the only one with a back-order to a particular domain name, and nobody else backorder’s that domain, the domain will in most cases will be awarded to you without an auction.
A domain will only go to auction if two or more back-order’s exist for that domain name with the same auction house.
There are many companies who back-order domains for people, and it’s no guarantee that you will get the domain even if you place a back-order with two or more companies.
But you will have a better chance to get the domain if you place your back order with multiple registrars if the domain drops.
